Hence I have no mercy or compassion in me for a society that will crush people, and then penalize them for not being able to stand up under the weight. – Malcolm X

Tonight, I watched ’12 years A Slave’. Heart wrenching. Incomprehensible that one person could treat another person like that, let alone many people. A culture of hate, that’s what slavery was and still is; today slavery comes in different forms but is still ever-present. Any person who feels that they need to subjugate another person to make them feel powerful is weak. Anyone who is so insecure within themselves that they must harm and abuse another person is nothing but full of cowardice. Too afraid to face your own reality, of who you really are.

Moreover, on a larger cultural scale, we have built a society based on greed and money and materialism. We have built a culture based on the failure of people so others can succeed. It is criminal. It is a machine that keeps the poor down, minorities in dire situations and the elite in power. It is unacceptable that there are people who are without homes, food and proper care. It is basic humanity, to look after one another.

I stand here today and I let no man control me. No man keep me down. I am a woman and I am free. Forevermore.
